Items needed:

- playing cards

- scissors

- cardboard for your template (I used a tissue box)

- lace

- straight pins OR rubber bands

Making the template:

1. Trace your playing card onto the cardboard; cut out

2. Create the cutout sections of the spool (choose the method for doing this that makes the most sense to you):

            A. draw the arches freehand and cut out (recommended ONLY if you’ve got a really good eye)

            B. use a compass to draw the arches and cut out (if you’re used to working with a compass, otherwise this method might get frustrating)

            C. place a mug on top of the cardboard cut-out and trace the arc of the mug; cut out (the option I went with).

Alternatively: if you don’t want to create your own template, there are several online. Vectoria Designs has a nice set and a video showing how she uses them: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FtpgO83EKYQ

Making the spools:

1. Place the template over your playing card and cut out .

2. Wind your lace onto the playing card spool.

3. Secure the lace with either a straight pin or a small rubber band.

Storage of the spools:

A long, narrow box works well. I use the drawers from an old Singer treadle sewing machine cabinet, but a narrow shoebox would work as well. Or a wider shoebox with a lengthwise division down the center.
